  5. Chillingworth is the "worst" sinner because he first tempts his young wife by sending her ahead without him into a new world. Secondly, he didn't take her up as his wife when she was being shamed on the town stand. Lastly, Chillingworth tortured Dimmesdale throughout his life.

  6. Roger Chillingworth, Hester Prynne's husband, is the worst sinner in The Scarlet Letter. His sins are far more worse than Hester's and Dimmesdale's. He abandons his wife in her time of need, and desires revenge on Reverend Dimmesdale. He is simply the symbol of evil in this novel.

  8. The "worst" sinner is Chillingworth, because he really didn't love Hester. Chillingworth should have stood up for Hester when she was put on the scaffold. Since Chillingworth didn't stand up for Hester, it shows that he doesn't care about Her. Therefore Chillingworth is the worst sinner.

  12. Dimmesdale, because he abandoned Pearl and Hester.

  13. The worst sinner is Chillingworth. Hester's and Dimmesdale's sin is created out of love; however, Chillingworth's is born of hate. Chillingworth chose to stay behind and torture whomever committed adultery with his wife. He did not stand by his wife when she was on the scaffold; instead, he left her to fend for herself and the baby. He did not stay true to his wedding vows and stick by his wife "for better or for worse." He becomes a leech, living off Dimmesdale's pain, for the rest of his life. Finally, Chillingworth dies after living a lonely life.

  14. Chillingworth is the worst sinner of the the three major characters. He left his wife and when he comes back he basically just shuns her. He then plots against Dimmesdale and tries to harm him.

  15. Chillingsworth was the worst sinner of them all because he didn't stand up and say that Hester was his wife. As her husband it was his obligation to take on the responsibilty and deal justly with Hester and her supposed sin.

  16. The worst sinner in The Scarlet Letter is Arthur Dimmesdale. Mr. Dimmesdale committed the same sin as Hester, having a baby out of wedlock, but he didn't confess or take the punishment as Hester did.

  17. In my opinion, Roger Chillingworth is the worst sinner in The Scarlet Letter if only because of his maliciousness toward Hester. Hester's and Arthur's sin was out of "love" as opposed to the hatred Chillingworth has in his heart.

  18. I think that Roger Chillingworth is the worst sinner. He leaves his wife in the new world alone, and gets angry with her when she commits adultery with another man. He makes both of their lives miserable in any way that he can, making him the worst sinner.
