  1. The most important character in The Scarlet Letter, was Hester's daughter Pearl. Had it not been for Pearl the main theme of sin in the book would not have been prevalent had she not been born. Pearl also was Hester's living burden that she carried throughout the book due to her sin. Pearl was the most important character because she was the product of Hester and Arthur's sin of adultery and shame.

  2. In THE SCARLET LETTER the most important character is Hester Prynne. Hester is a strong character because she endured many hardships and overcame the many things she went through. Hester was an incredible woman. She was strong and it seemed as if nothing could pull her down. In some ways Hester was a role model to some young women, and that was why she was the most important character.

  3. The most important character in THE SCARLET LETTER is Hester Prynne. She committed adultry, and made the whole town frown upon her. The whole entire story is based on Hester's sin. If Hester Prynne had never committed the act of adultry, there wouldn't be any book titled THE SCARLET LETTER.

  4. The most important character in THE SCARLET LETTER is Pearl Prynne. If Pearl had never been born, Hester would not have been caught in adultery. However, by Pearl being born, everyone has evidence that Hester has done something wrong. Therefore, Hester is punished for the sin of adultery, and thus, THE SCARLET LETTER has a story to tell.

  5. The most important character in THE SCARLET LETTER is Roger Chillingsworth. If Roger had taken a different course of action, multiple times throughout the story, the entire plot would have been altered. Had Roger been more committed to his marriage with Hester, perhaps the sin of adultery could have been completely avoided. His passion for medicine and his determination to extract revenge shaped the plot of the story from beginning to end.

  6. The most important character in The Scarlet Letter is Pearl. If Hester did not get pregnant with Pearl, the society would not have known she had an affair. The scarlet letter A is a symbol of pearl. She is the reason for the letter embroidered on her mothers chest, and without her there would be no scarlet letter.

  7. In THE SCARLET LETTER Nathaniel Hawthorne deals with sin and the relationships between the sinner and society's reactions to it, Hester Prynne committed the sin and has a constant reminder of this fact. The most important character in THE SCARLET LETTER is Pearl. The story revolves around her because she is the product of her mother's sin and the source of fear for most other characters in the book. Pearl is the bodily form of sin to the villagers, also even if the court that cursed Hester with the Letter ruled to let her remove it from her breast Pearl would not let that happen because all she ever knew of her mother from birth is the Scarlet Letter, she does not recognize her mother without it. Pearl is a constant reminder of her mother's sin thus making her the most important character in the book.

  8. The most important character in THE SCARLET LETTER is Roger Chillingsworth. He is driving force behind most every action. His absence and lack of communication in the beginning drove Hester and Arthur to do what they did. Hester cannot be blamed for it because every human has desires, and she is no exception. He is also the reason Arthur became more depressed, sad, and secluded. All this and more proves that Roger Chillingsworth is the most important character of the book.

  13. Nathaniel Hawthorne's THE SCARLET LETTER, follows the lives of Hester Prynne and Arthur Dimmsdale, two adulterers living in Boston in the Puritan era. Along with the two 'sinners' of the story, Hawthorne introduces Roger Chillingworth, Hester's unknown husband, and Pearl, the creation of their sin. THE SCARLET LETTER focuses on all four of these characters, and how they deal with the sin at hand. One character is not more important than another.

  14. The most important character in The Scarlet Letter is Pearl. Pearl is a living symbol of what the scarlet letter A on Hester's chest represents. Both Pearl and the A are products of Hester's sin and they both let everyone know that Hester Prynne is an adulteress. Pearl is the most important character because without her, no one would have known of Hester and Dimmesdale's affair and there would have never been a scarlet letter on Hester's chest.

  16. The most important character in THE SCARLET LETTER is Roger Chillingworth. Due to his obsession with bringing revenge to his wife's lover, Arther Dimmesdale, Chillingworth's hatred is a large part of the storyline. Ultimately, Chillingworth's torture of Dimmesdale leads to Dimmesdale's death. Much of Hester's own suffering can also be traced to Cihllingworth's actions. If not for his hatred, Hester Prynne and Arthur Dimmesdale might have been reunited, and set onto a happier path.

  19. The most important person in THE SCARLET LETTER was Arthur Dimmesdale. He was the most important character in the book because if it had not been for Dimmesdale then this whole Hester and Dimmesdale thing would have never happened. They would have also never had a child named Pearl and there would be no story. Dimmesdale helps make this book so important by his actions.

  20. The most important character in THE SCARLET LETTER is Pearl. Pearl is the manifestation of Hester and Arthur's sin, and the sole reason for the book's conflict. Her birth sparks the uncovering of Hester's adultery, and sets the tone for the rest of the book as it follows her through isolation. As Pearl's birth is the solitary reason for the tragedy that follows, she is undoubtedly the most important.

  21. Hester Prynne's illigetement child, Pearl, is the most important character because she brings the story to life. Without her, there would have been no evidence of Hester and Arthur's transgression. Pearl punishes both of her parents daily, simply from her existence. She represents their forbidden love for each other.

  22. In the SCARELET LETTER, Hester Prynne is a important character, not just because she is one of the main character, but because of what her character represents. Hester shows strength and bravery, something that most women did not have as characteristics in that day in time. People mocked and turned up their nose because she committed a crime that was so disgusting and had no honor. Hester never let the townspeople see her with a weaken visage even when they scorned her. Through all the whispers with disapprovement and stares with hatred, she held her head up. Hester Prynne had no need to speak of her strength her actions spoke loud and clear.
